It's natural to think of hope and joy as somehow related; they're both fruits of the Spirit after all. In this story, the author makes an interesting point: we can let the hope for tomorrow steal the joy of today. I may not be counting down the days until I get home from Iraq like the author, but at this point in my life, there are many things I am looking forward to. It's all too easy to forget the joy I already have.
